The proposed residential area on Al Aween Mountain is being studied as part of wider planning for Khorfakkan’s neighbourhoods.

Sharjah is studying the possibility of developing a new residential area on top of Al Aween Mountain in Khorfakkan, as part of wider plans to address housing needs and reorganise neighbourhoods in the city.
His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, said the proposal involves studying the levelling of the summit of Al Aween Mountain to create land for a residential area capable of accommodating a large number of people.
The comments were made during a phone interview on the Direct Line programme with Mohamed Hassan Khalaf, Director General of the Sharjah Broadcasting Authority.
Sheikh Dr Sultan said Khorfakkan is surrounded by mountains on all sides, from Al Hawami towards the sea, extending south and north to Al Aqaba at the entrance to Al Luluyah. He said the city’s neighbourhoods form part of Khorfakkan itself, rather than being separate suburbs.
According to the remarks, the Al Aween Mountain area extends from Victoria School to Al Ghazir and includes the Al Ashqar neighbourhood. The area is being reorganised into two suburbs.
“There is no other space remaining in this spot, so we are now studying the possibility of going up into the mountains,” Sheikh Dr Sultan said, according to The Gulf Pulse, citing inputs from WAM.
He added that Al Aween, described as the largest mountain in the area, could provide sufficient land for a new residential development if its summit were levelled.
The proposal is being studied alongside a new administrative division for Khorfakkan, which Sheikh Dr Sultan said has been completed and will be announced soon. The planned division includes the establishment of Al Subaihiya as a suburb covering Al Nakheel, Al Luluyah, Al Zubarah and Hasi.
No timeline, capacity, approval status or construction details have been announced for the proposed Al Aween Mountain residential area.
The study follows earlier housing-related announcements for Khorfakkan. In January 2026, Sheikh Dr Sultan announced the allocation of a new area in Jabal Al Ashkel, near the Khorfakkan Club for the Disabled, for a residential neighbourhood that will include hundreds of homes for citizens and be named Al Ashkel Neighbourhood.
At the time, Sheikh Dr Sultan said there were 270 homes under construction in Khorfakkan, including 120 homes in Al Mudeife, and noted that a road would be paved in the area leading to Al Rafisah.
The latest Al Aween study points to Sharjah’s continued focus on expanding housing options in the emirate’s eastern region, while balancing urban planning with Khorfakkan’s mountain geography and limited land availability.
