Shamal Advances Dubai Zoo Redevelopment With Dutco Appointment

The transformation of one of Jumeirah’s most familiar landmarks is moving into its next phase, with Shamal appointing Dutco Construction to deliver the residential redevelopment of the former Dubai Zoo site.

Located in Jumeirah 1, the project will turn the historic site into a low-rise community comprising 90 homes, set among landscaped courtyards and green spaces. The development is being shaped around the character of the former zoo, combining new residential uses with elements designed to preserve the site’s connection to its past.

Shamal is leading the redevelopment alongside development partner H&H, with architecture studio DXB Lab behind the design.

The residential concept places greenery at the centre of the community, incorporating existing mature trees alongside a central park and landscaped areas. Planned amenities include a clubhouse, wellness facilities, a family swimming pool, gym and children’s play areas.

For Shamal, the project is as much about retaining the identity of the site as introducing a new residential offering to Jumeirah.

The former Dubai Zoo holds a distinctive place in the city’s history. Opened in 1967, it operated for five decades before closing permanently in November 2017, when its animals were transferred to Dubai Safari Park.

Its next chapter is being approached with that legacy in mind. While construction progresses, Shamal has wrapped the perimeter of the site in a 710-metre public art installation by Dubai-based multidisciplinary artist Solimar Miller. The 12-piece collection, titled Flora of Light, draws inspiration from the flora and fauna associated with the former zoo.

The appointment of Dutco moves the project from its early redevelopment phase towards construction, bringing Shamal closer to delivering a residential community that gives one of old Dubai’s best-known sites a distinctly different purpose while retaining a connection to its history.
